There are quite a few different diet medications currently available by prescription only and among the most commonly prescribed is Adipex, also known as Adipex-P. This brand name medication contains the drug phentermine hydrochloride, which is a form of stimulant known as an anorectic that functions by suppressing the appetite of the user so that he or she will not be inclined to eat as much or as frequently.
Phentermine is believed to work by boosting neurotransmitter levels in the brain, such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. When these three chemicals are increased, feelings of hunger decrease. This appetite suppression effect may help to lower the number of calories a person eats. Over time, this can lead to weight loss.
Adipex is Taken as Part of a Complete Weight Loss Program
Adipex is different from many of the weight loss supplements currently on the market in that it is designed specifically for individuals – both men and women – who have been diagnosed with obesity, and as a result of this condition are also at risk of serious health risks such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and/or high blood pressure. It is not a supplement. It is a prescription drug.
Adipex is not a solution for weight loss all by itself but is instead a part of a complete program that includes a healthy well balanced and portion-controlled diet, as well as a proper daily exercise regimen.
For this reason, it is important to keep regular appointments with a doctor throughout the use of the pill in order to ensure that it is being used properly and the appropriate lifestyle changes are being maintained. These appointments will also help you and your doctor to work together to assess your progress and be confident that this drug is working well for you and that the dosage is correct.
Be Vigilant About Using this Drug Carefully
It is also important to take this medication as it has been prescribed. You need to remember that if it is prescribed to you, your doctor believes that the benefits of taking this medication outweigh the potential risks associated with it. Therefore, if for any reason you feel that you should increase your dose, lower your dose, or stop taking this medication altogether, you should first inform your doctor about your concerns.
Likewise, keep in mind that Adipex is a short-term obesity treatment. Some people who take this medication may build up a tolerance to its appetite-suppressing effects within a few weeks of taking it. In such cases, the dosage of the medication is not increased, and the patient is taken off the medication.
Is Adipex Right for You?
Only you and your doctor can decide whether Adipex is right for you. Start by informing yourself by reading about this medication and checking out some more Adipex reviews than you may already have read. This will help you to understand the medication and know what questions you’d like to ask your doctor.
Your physician will only prescribe Adipex as a part of an obesity treatment or if you are quite overweight and the extra body fat is contributing to a health condition or risk factor. If these don’t apply to you, the odds are that you’ll receive a prescription for another medication, or you’ll be instructed to create a different type of weight loss strategy altogether.
This drug will also likely not be appropriate for you if you are already taking other medications or supplements that will interact with it. There are also a number of medical conditions that can make the use of this medication dangerous, so it’s very important to discuss your medical history with your doctor if they are considering prescribing Adipex.
Common Side Effects
As a prescription drug, Adipex is associated with a number of potential side effects. Among them are:
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Impaired thinking
- Withdrawal
- Extreme tiredness
It is important to understand that these are only a few of a longer list of side effects that are possible with the use of this drug.
Dieters who are allergic to stimulants will not be able to take this drug. Moreover, it should not be taken by people with an overactive thyroid gland, glaucoma, or alcoholism.
Some health issues that can occur through the use of this drug include:
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Blurred vision
- Insomnia
Final Thoughts
Among the advantages of Adipex is the fact that you must obtain a doctor’s prescription in order to purchase it. Therefore, this means that it is better regulated than many other forms of supplements and products meant for weight loss.
Furthermore, it means that your doctor will have considered your unique health situation including your medical history, any conditions you have, and any other medications you will be taking at the same time. This helps to ensure that you will be taking the right product for you.
Some of the disadvantages include the side effects and that you cannot obtain it without having obtained the permission of a licensed doctor. Also, it is not meant for people who are simply seeking cosmetic weight loss. Only individuals with obesity and certain health risks will obtain a prescription.
Looking Elsewhere
If Adipex is not appropriate for you because you are not treating obesity, then you may want to think about whether a non-prescription diet pill might suit your weight loss strategy more effectively. Consider options from established, well reputed manufacturers or brands. Make sure you’re only looking at products in which every ingredient has undergone clinical research.
This will help you to feel confident that the benefits you’ll enjoy will suit the type of efforts you’re making in the name of weight loss. It will also help you to overcome the specific challenges you may be facing along your journey to your goal weight.
Among the most common challenges are fatigue, lack of drive, dwindling focus or alertness, and a slow metabolism. In these cases, look for a product that will support you through benefits such as energy boosting, focus enhancement, improved alertness, and healthy metabolic rate support. These will all ease your challenges and make it easier for you to establish your habits and stick to them.
Was wondering about pricing on Adipex withiut a script. Thanks.
@ Cindi-
You HAVE to have a prescription from your doctor to get adipex. You can’t buy it online or otherwise without one. What you CAN buy online and without a script is PhentraminD, which is very similar to Adipex. You can get a one month supply for $67.00 which is not bad because you can lose up to 20lbs in a month.
I get my Phentermine 37.5mg from the Urgent Care pharmacy for $15 which is a very good price. If you have an Urgent Care where you live try them.
Did you have to have an RX in order to buy it?
@Adrienna
Yes you need a prescription to buy phentermine. PhentraminD on the other hand you can buy online without a prescription.
Phentermine and adipex both work extremely well but they are hard to get and have a lot of side effects. If you are unable to get them I would highly recommend PhentraminD. I have lost 11 lbs and I have been taking it for 10 days. I have gone from 147 to 136 and I am 5’2″.
Will Phentramin D work as good as Adipex? I need to shed about 40lbs and I want to do it before summer… Ya I know, leaving it to the last minute. Something I am good at.
I have lost 25 lbs so far with being on phentramin d. I really do think it’s helping but i am watching what i put in my mouth when i do eat something. I am eating a lot of lean meats and non fat dairy. I do have a glass of wine every night as well. can’t seem to give that one up!! but if i did i am sure i would be down even more. Is it as good as adipex? not totally sure, but it works for me!
Some people say it works better then adipex and others say it’s not as stong. I think it just depends on the person and who you talk to.
For me I think adipex was a bit stronger, made you feel more “wired” but I am still losing weight with Phentramin d too so it’s hard to say. Both of them do work though and are not a waste of money as I have lost weight with both.
For me I wish phentramin D was a little stronger but I do find it is giving me extra energy during the day and I am eating less. My weigh in is at the end of the week so I will report back with my results.
Ok been taking Phentramin D for 8 weeks and I have lost a total of 26.7 lbs. I am very happy with this result and I know it’s because of the Phentramin D because never before have I lost this much weight or been able to stick with dieting for this long, ever. Usually I get to around 10 lbs and then I have a screw up/plateau/go back to my old ways etc. and it puts me right back to the drawing board. I have also taken to running 4 days a week on my treadmill which previously was an excellent dust collector.
I have heard it works very comparably. I was unable to get adipex from my doctor though because my start weight was not nearly heavy enough so I got myself phentraminD.
Thinking of ordering phentramin d and wondering what kids of side effects there are associated with it? I am about 200 lbs and 5ft 7.
thanks,
Side effects people report seem to be mostly a dry mouth, jittery feeling, insomnia if taken too late in the day and lots of energy.I have been doing a lot of research and in general it seems that phentramin D is a lot easier for most people to take then adipex.
I am male, current weight is 225 at 5’10” tall. My start weight was 278. I have lost over 50 lbs in 3 months with phentramin D with no notable side effets. My girlfriend also bought be the Bowflex Revolution and I have never felt this good or been this healthy. If anyone asks how I did it, I tell them diet, bowflex and phentramin D.
@ eric- where did you get your blowflex? I have been looking around for one and just curious to know…
My girlfriend actually found it on Craiglist. Got a great deal on it too. Before you buy new I would really shop around. That goes for anything!
I am taking adipex and I saw pretty dramatic results my first month but I am into my second month and it seems to be slowing down. So far I have lost 19 lbs, I need to lose about 20 more to get to my goal weight. I am satisfied as I was looking for something that would jumpstart my weight loss, and it did, but I guess it was wishful thinking that it would last for months and months.
Adipex is incredible stuff I don’t think I would ever have been able to lose the weight without it. In total I have lost over 100 lbs and my life is 1000 times better now. My advice: take the pills, eat nutritious meals and enlist the help of a trainer 3 x per week.
Phentramin D worked great for me. gave me energy and reduced my appetite. wears off after about 3 months though but it gives you a great kickstart for sure.
What is Phentramin D? Is it like Adipex??
It is like adipex and it works in a similar way but it is not the same thing.
It’s a very good appetite suppressant and yes it is like adipex but not as harsh. You won’t have the terrible side effects that often accompany adipex.
It’s not the same but supposedly it works really well too.
I am on Phentramin D and I have lost 11 lbs in 2 weeks. The only side effect I have is a dry mouth. I find it is a good appetite suppressant but you have to be committed to eating healthier over all. You really have to make some life style changes. I can’t even go out to eat with certain people anymore because I don’t want to be tempted by their bad habits. Don’t think of it as the “be all end all” for your weight loss but think of it as a tool to HELP you. So many people have the wrong idea and think it’s this miracle pill and you don’t have to do any work. Have a weight loss game plan in place, then take the pills and your hard work will be rewarded.
I am taking Adipex and really I’m eating smaller portions and less food over all. I don’t crave sweets anymore which was my major problem. My ultimate goal is to get down to 135. I was 182 about 2 weeks ago. Now I’m at 167.
My friend is taking adipex and she has lost 20 lbs. She swears by breaking the pill in half and only takaing HALF the dose. I think this is KEY to avoiding the side effects especially if you are not used to taking drugs of this type. We often see the strongest mg and that’s what we think is the best. Be careful how you take it and I think it will work for you. I am looking forward to trying it myself.
I have yo yo-ed like crazy for the last 5 years (I had two children in that time frame) I have packed it on pretty good lately and I don’t seem to be able to get it off this time on my own. I have friends who have tried adipex with great results so off to the doctor I go. I hear once you are on it that is the easy part. The real challenge comes when you stop taking it and you have to keep the weight from coming back on!
This is the most amazing weight loss pill I have ever tried. I am down 19 lbs in a month. A little jittery, yes, but so well worth it. I work out all the time because I need an outlet for the energy and my appetite is nil.
I have read about all the side effects but the only thing I have experienced is a few light headaches and then a bit of an elated “high” feeling. I don’t feel tired all the time anymore and I feel more alive. I have also dropped several dress sizes!
Does adipex make you feel “speedy” at all? I want something that is going to give me the energy boost but I don’t want to feel high all the time.
thanks
Yes it can make you feel speedy. It is an Amphetamine. If you don’t want the speed feeling try Phentramin D.
Why is it friends and family feel they have to push unhealthy foods on you when they KNOW you are trying to diet? I can’t tell you how many times I hear “you can take a day off” or “you have lost so much already.” I really need my friends to be supportive right now and they just aren’t. Sorry rant over.
